Background
The Decapolis (Greek for 'ten cities') is a region east of the Jordan River and east of the Sea of Galilee, famous for the league of ten Hellenistic cities. When the fame of Jesus' Galilean ministry spread, crowds from the Decapolis followed him (Matt 4:25; Mark 3:8). Within the region he cast a legion of demons from a Gadarene into a herd of about two thousand swine (Matt 8:28-34; Mark 5:1-20); he also healed a deaf and stammering man (Mark 7:31-37). In the wilderness of the Decapolis he fed four thousand with seven loaves and a few small fish (Matt 15:32-39; Mark 8:1-9).
