Background
Gadara stands at the modern village of Umm Qais in northern Jordan, on a ridge about ten kilometers east of the Sea of Galilee. It was one of the most prominent cities of the Decapolis, founded by the Seleucid dynasty. The Gospel account of 'the region of the Gadarenes' (Matt 8:28) refers to this area. After crossing the lake, Jesus met a man who lived among the tombs and was possessed by a legion of demons. Jesus commanded the unclean spirits to come out, and allowed them to enter a herd of about two thousand swine nearby; the herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea. The healed man begged to remain with Jesus, but was told to go home and proclaim what the Lord had done for him (Mark 5:1-20; Luke 8:26-39).
