Where Abraham offered Isaac; later Solomon built Jehovah's temple here. A sacred site spanning the patriarchal and kingdom eras.
First mentioned in the Bible
“Please take your son, your only son whom you so love, Isaac, and travel to the land of Moriah, and offer him up there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains that I will designate to you.”— Genesis 22:2
Background
Mount Moriah is one of the most symbolic sites in the Bible. Around 1893 BCE, Jehovah tested Abraham's faith by commanding him to offer his only son Isaac here. Abraham obeyed, but at the last moment an angel stopped him and Jehovah provided a ram as substitute. About a thousand years later, King Solomon built Jehovah's magnificent temple on the same mountain (c. 967 BCE), making Mount Moriah the center of Israelite worship.
