Where the proconsul believed on Paul's first journey — and "Saul" became "Paul."
First mentioned in the Bible
Then Saul, also called Paul, becoming filled with holy spirit, looked at him intently— Acts 13:9
Background
Paphos, on the island's southwest coast, was the capital of the Roman province of Cyprus. Barnabas and Saul crossed the whole island to reach it, where the proconsul Sergius Paulus asked to hear the word of God. When Elymas the sorcerer opposed the gospel, Paul declared him blind for a season, and the proconsul, seeing what was done, believed. From this passage on, Luke calls Saul by the name Paul.
