Nineveh

Nineveh · Opposite Mosul, Iraq
Capital of the Assyrian Empire, the great city where Jonah was sent to preach.
First mentioned in the Bible
“When the true God saw what they did, how they had turned back from their evil way, he did not bring the calamity that he said he would bring on them.”— Jonah 3:10
Background
Nineveh was one of the largest cities of the ancient world, on the eastern bank of the Tigris. The prophet Jonah initially fled but later obediently went to proclaim judgment. The entire city repented in sackcloth and ashes, and Jehovah showed them mercy (Jonah 3). In 612 BCE the combined forces of Babylon and Media captured the city.
