Capital of the Ammonites; David sent Uriah to die here in battle
First mentioned in the Bible
“At the start of the year, at the time when kings go on campaigns, David sent Joab with his servants and all Israel to devastate the Ammonites and besiege Rabbah; but David stayed in Jerusalem.”— 2 Samuel 11:1
Background
Rabbah was the capital of the Ammonites, located at modern Amman, Jordan. During Joab's siege of the city, David stayed in Jerusalem, committed adultery with Bathsheba, and arranged for her husband Uriah to die by ordering him placed at the front of the fiercest battle. Joab later captured Rabbah, and David took the gold crown of the Ammonite king.
