ATLAS OF THE HOLY LAND

Plains of Moab

Plains of Moab · East bank of Jordan Valley
The last encampment of Israel before entering the Promised Land; Moses delivered his final speeches here.
First mentioned in the Bible
"Moses went up from the Plains of Moab to Mount Nebo... Jehovah said to him: 'This is the land I swore to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob...' Moses died there."— Deuteronomy 34:1-5
Background
The Plains of Moab lay on the east bank of the Jordan, opposite Jericho. After 40 years of wandering, Israel camped here before crossing into Canaan. Moses repeated the Law to the new generation, viewed the Promised Land from Mount Nebo, and died here. Joshua succeeded him as leader.
Related Scriptures (New World Translation)
Then Moses went up from the desert plains of Moʹab to Mount Neʹbo, to the top of Pisʹgah, which faces Jerʹi·cho. And Jehovah showed him all the land, from Gilʹe·ad to Dan, and all Naphʹta·li and the land of Eʹphra·im and Ma·nasʹseh, and all the land of Judah as far as the western sea, and the Negʹeb and the District, the valley plain of Jerʹi·cho, the city of the palm trees, as far as Zoʹar. Jehovah then said to him: “This is the land about which I have sworn to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, saying, ‘To your offspring I will give it.’ I have let you see it with your own eyes, but you will not cross over there.” After that Moses the servant of Jehovah died there in the land of Moʹab just as Jehovah had said.— Deuteronomy 34:1-5
