ATLAS OF THE HOLY LAND

Rome

Rome · Rome, Italy
Capital of the empire, where Paul preached boldly even in chains.
First mentioned in the Bible
So he remained there for an entire two years in his own rented house, and he would kindly receive all those who came to him, preaching the Kingdom of Godto them and teaching about the Lord Jesus Christ with the greatest freeness of speech, without hindrance.— Acts 28:30-31
Background
Rome was the center of the world — "all roads lead to Rome." Having appealed unto Caesar, Paul survived shipwreck to reach the city at last, where he dwelt two years under guard in his own hired house, preaching the kingdom of God with all confidence. The epistle to the Romans is the summit of his gospel theology; tradition holds that both Paul and Peter were martyred in Rome.
