Solomon's Tarshish fleet returned every three years with gold, silver, and ivory
First mentioned in the Bible
"The king had a fleet of ships of Tarshish at sea with the fleet of Hiram. Once every three years the fleet of Tarshish would come in, carrying gold, silver, ivory, apes, and peacocks."— 1 Kings 10:22
Background
Tarshish represents the far western trading destination in the Bible. Solomon possessed a 'fleet of Tarshish'—large merchant ships capable of ocean voyages. The prophet Jonah also tried to flee to Tarshish.
