Athens

Athens · Athens, Greece
Where Paul proclaimed the "Unknown God" to philosophers on Mars' hill.

For instance, while passing along and carefully observing your objects of veneration, I found even an altar on which had been inscribed ‘To an Unknown God.’ Therefore, what you are unknowingly worshipping, this I am declaring to you.— Acts 17:23
Background
Athens was the center of Greek philosophy and art, a city wholly given to idolatry. Stirred in spirit at the sight of its idols, Paul disputed in the synagogue and the marketplace, then delivered his famous address on Mars' hill — beginning from an altar inscribed "TO THE UNKNOWN GOD" and leading to the one true God who made all things and raised Jesus from the dead.
