Background
Lystra was a Roman colony in Lycaonia. Here Paul healed a man crippled from birth, yet the crowd called Barnabas Jupiter and Paul Mercurius and sought to sacrifice to them; soon after, stirred up by others, they stoned Paul and dragged him out of the city, supposing him dead. On his second journey Paul revisited the city and took with him the young disciple Timothy.
