First mentioned in the Bible
"In the third month after the Israelites left the land of Egypt, on that day, they came to the wilderness of Sinai. They departed from Rephidim and came to the wilderness of Sinai and camped in front of the mountain."— Exodus 19:1-2
Background
The Israelites arrived at the Wilderness of Sinai in the third month after leaving Egypt and camped at the foot of Mount Sinai for nearly a year. During this time, Jehovah gave the Ten Commandments and the entire Law code, Moses built the tabernacle, and the Levites were set apart for priestly duties. This was a critical period when Israel became an organized nation.
