Capernaum · Ruins on the north shore of the Sea of Galilee, Israel
The hub of Jesus' Galilean ministry, called "his own city."
First mentioned in the Bible
Further, after leaving Nazʹa·reth, he came and took up residence in Ca·perʹna·um beside the sea in the districts of Zebʹu·lun and Naphʹta·li,— Matthew 4:13
Background
Capernaum was a fishing town on the north shore of the Sea of Galilee. After leaving Nazareth, Jesus made it his base of ministry — teaching in the synagogue, healing the centurion's servant and Peter's mother-in-law, and forgiving the paralytic's sins. Peter, Andrew, and Matthew were all called here to follow him.
