Gaza

Gaza · Gaza City, Gaza Strip
One of the five Philistine cities; Samson pushed down the pillars of the temple of Dagon here.
First mentioned in the Bible
“Samson said: ‘Let me die with the Philistines.’ Then he pushed with all his might, and the house fell on all the people in it.”— Judges 16:30
Background
Gaza was the southernmost of the five major Philistine city-states. After the Philistines gouged out Samson's eyes, he was imprisoned in a grinding mill in Gaza. When they brought him out during a celebration, Samson prayed for strength, pushed down the two main pillars, and the temple collapsed (Judges 16:28-30).
Related Scriptures (New World Translation)
Samson called out: “Let me die with the Phi·lisʹtines!” Then he pushed with all his might, and the house fell on the lords and all the people in it. So he killed more at his death than he had killed during his life.— Judges 16:30
