Where Abraham and Isaac dug wells and made covenants, marking Israel's southern border.
First mentioned in the Bible
After that he planted a tamarisk tree at Beʹer-sheʹba, and there he called on the name of Jehovah, the everlasting God.— Genesis 21:33
Background
Beersheba means 'well of the oath.' Abraham made a covenant with Abimelech here and planted a tamarisk tree. Isaac also dug wells here. 'From Dan to Beersheba' is the biblical idiom for all Israel. Elijah passed through fleeing Jezebel, sat under a broom tree wishing to die, but an angel provided food for his forty-day journey to Horeb.
