One of the five Philistine cities; hometown of the giant Goliath.
First mentioned in the Bible
“David thrust his hand into his bag and took a stone from it and slung it, striking the Philistine on his forehead. The stone sank into his forehead, and he fell facedown on the ground.”— 1 Samuel 17:49
Background
Gath was one of the five major Philistine city-states, in the Judean foothills. Its most famous resident was the giant Goliath—a Philistine warrior about 2.9 meters tall who challenged Israel's army for forty days. The young shepherd David, relying on faith in Jehovah, killed Goliath with just a sling and a stone (1 Samuel 17). Later David twice fled to King Achish of Gath to escape Saul.
