Ziklag

Ziklag · Negev region, southern Israel
The city given to David by Achish king of Gath; David dwelt there one year and four months.
First mentioned in the Bible
David was very distressed, because the men were talking of stoning him, for all the menhad become very bitter over the loss of their sons and daughters. But David strengthened himself by Jehovah his God.— 1 Samuel 30:6
Background
Ziklag originally belonged to the Philistines. Achish king of Gath gave it to David as a place of refuge. David lived there one year and four months, using it as a base to raid southern nomadic tribes. Later the Amalekites raided Ziklag while David was away, burning the city and taking the women and children captive. David pursued and recovered everything. Ziklag represents the most difficult period of David's exile and the moment he learned to strengthen himself in the Lord.
