ATLAS OF THE HOLY LAND

Migdol

Migdol · Near Tell es-Samut, east of the Suez Canal, Egypt
A place where the Israelites camped before the Red Sea during the Exodus, and a marker of Egypt’s northern boundary in prophetic writings.
First mentioned in the Bible
“Tell the Israelites to turn back and encamp before Pi-hahiroth, between Migdol and the sea, in view of Baal-zephon. You are to encamp facing it by the sea.”— Exodus 14:2
Background
Migdol means ‘watchtower’ and was a military fortress on the eastern frontier of ancient Egypt. Exodus 14:2 records that Jehovah told the Israelites to turn back and camp between Migdol and the sea; Pharaoh thought they were lost in the wilderness and pursued them. In Ezekiel 29:10 and 30:6, Migdol represents Egypt’s northern boundary, and the prophet declared that Jehovah’s judgment would sweep the entire land.
