The city in Egypt where the remnant of Judah settled after defying Jeremiah’s warning; Jeremiah prophesied Babylon would strike Egypt here.
First mentioned in the Bible
“Take in your hand large stones, and in the sight of the Jewish men, hide them in the mortar in the brick terrace at the entrance of the house of Pharaoh in Tahpanhes. Then say to them, ‘This is what Jehovah of armies, the God of Israel, says: “I am sending for my servant King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon, and I will place his throne over these stones that I have hidden.”’”— Jeremiah 43:9, 10
Background
Tahpanhes was a fortress city on the eastern frontier of ancient Egypt, at the eastern edge of the Nile Delta. After Jerusalem fell, the remnant of Judah defied Jeremiah’s counsel and fled to Egypt, settling in Tahpanhes. There Jeremiah, at Jehovah’s command, hid large stones in the brick terrace at the entrance of Pharaoh’s palace, prophesying that Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon would come and strike Egypt. This prophecy warns that fleeing from Jehovah’s will offers no refuge.
