Background
Noph is the Hebrew name for Memphis, the ancient capital of Egypt on the western bank of the Nile. It was Egypt’s most splendid religious and political center, famed for the temple of Ptah and its many idols. Isaiah 19:13 prophesied that the princes of Noph were deceived and led Egypt astray. Ezekiel 30:13 declared that Jehovah would destroy the idols of Noph and there would no longer be a prince in the land. Hosea 9:6 also mentions Israel being buried there. These prophecies have been fulfilled—Memphis gradually declined and today only ruins remain.
