Mount Gilboa · Mount Gilboa Nature Reserve, Israel
The battlefield where King Saul and his three sons fell.
First mentioned in the Bible
“You mountains of Gilboa, may there be no dew or rain on you, nor fields producing offerings. For there the shield of the mighty was defiled.”— 2 Samuel 1:21
Background
Mount Gilboa is a mountain range on the southern edge of the Jezreel Valley in northern Israel. The decisive battle between Israel and the Philistines took place here. Saul's army was routed, his three sons fell, and Saul himself fell on his own sword (1 Samuel 31:1-6). David composed a famous lament, cursing Gilboa to have no dew or rain (2 Samuel 1:19-21).
