Philippi

Philippi · Ruins of Philippi, northeastern Greece
Birthplace of Europe's first church, where Paul and Silas sang in prison.
First mentioned in the Bible
And a woman named Lydʹi·a, a seller of purple from the city of Thy·a·tiʹra and a worshipper of God, was listening, and Jehovah opened her heart wide to pay attention to the things Paul was saying.— Acts 16:14
Background
Philippi was a Roman colony in Macedonia. Led by his vision across the sea to Europe, Paul brought Lydia, a seller of purple, to faith and immersion by the riverside. Cast into prison, Paul and Silas prayed and sang praises at midnight; a great earthquake threw open every door, and the jailer and all his house believed. The epistle to the Philippians is Paul's letter to this congregation he dearly loved.
