First mentioned in the Bible
When he had said these things, he cried out with a loud voice: “Lazarus, come out!” The man who had been dead came out with his feet and hands bound with wrappings, and his face was wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them: “Free him and let him go.”— John 11:43-44
Background
Bethany lies on the eastern slope of the Mount of Olives, about three kilometers from Jerusalem. Four days after Lazarus died, Jesus cried 'Lazarus, come forth!' and the dead man came out. Mary anointed Jesus' feet with costly spikenard. Jesus ascended near here after the resurrection.
