Where a Canaanite king attacked Israel; later completely destroyed by the Israelites.
First mentioned in the Bible
"The Canaanite king of Arad, who lived in the Negev, heard that Israel was coming... Israel made a vow to Jehovah: 'If you give this people into our hand, we will devote their cities to destruction.'"— Numbers 21:1-3
Background
Arad was a Canaanite city in the Negev. When Israel passed through after leaving Egypt, the king of Arad attacked and captured some of them. Israel vowed to Jehovah that if He delivered these people into their hands, they would devote their cities to destruction. Jehovah listened, and they defeated the Canaanites.
Related Scriptures (New World Translation)
When the Caʹnaan·ite king of Aʹrad, who dwelled in the Negʹeb, heard that Israel had come by the way of Athʹa·rim, he attacked Israel and carried away some of them as captives. So Israel made this vow to Jehovah: “If you give this people into my hand, I will without fail devote their cities to destruction.” So Jehovah listened to Israel’s voice and gave the Caʹnaan·ites over to them, and they devoted them and their cities to destruction. Therefore, they named the place Horʹmah.— Numbers 21:1-3
