En Gedi

En Gedi · Dead Sea western shore oasis, Israel
Dead Sea oasis where David hid from Saul and spared his life in the cave.
First mentioned in the Bible
He said to his men: “It is unthinkable from Jehovah’s standpoint that I should do such a thing to my lord, the anointed of Jehovah, by lifting my hand against him, for he is the anointed of Jehovah.”— 1 Samuel 24:6
Background
En Gedi is a water-rich oasis on the western shore of the Dead Sea, surrounded by desert cliffs. David hid in its caves while fleeing Saul. First Samuel 24 records how Saul entered the very cave where David was hiding. David secretly cut the corner of Saul's robe but refused to harm the Lord's anointed. This event reveals David's reverence for God and his refusal to repay evil with evil, foreshadowing the heart worthy of kingship.
