Bethel

Bethel · Beitin, West Bank
Where Jacob dreamed of the ladder to heaven; the name means "House of Jehovah God."
First mentioned in the Bible
Then he had a dream, and look! there was a stairway set on the earth, and its top reached up to the heavens; and there were God’s angels ascending and descending on it.— Genesis 28:12
Background
Bethel was formerly called Luz. Abraham built an altar here and called on the name of the LORD; Jacob, fleeing to Haran, dreamed here of a ladder reaching to heaven, set up a stone pillar on waking, and named the place Bethel. It later became a major center of worship in Israel.
