First mentioned in the Bible
Aʹbram traveled through the land as far as the site of Sheʹchem, near the big trees of Moʹreh. At that time the Caʹnaan·ites were in the land. Jehovah then appeared to Aʹbram and said: “To your offspring I am going to give this land.” So he built an altar there to Jehovah, who had appeared to him.— Genesis 12:6-7
Background
Shechem lies between Mount Gerizim and Mount Ebal. It was Abraham's first stop in Canaan where the LORD promised the land to his descendants. Jacob purchased land and built an altar here. Joshua gathered all tribes here to renew the covenant. After Solomon's death, Rehoboam's refusal here led to the kingdom's division.
