City where Melchizedek was king; believed to be the ancient name for Jerusalem.
First mentioned in the Bible
"Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. He was priest of the Most High God. He blessed Abram and said: 'Blessed be Abram by the Most High God, Maker of heaven and earth.'"— Genesis 14:18-20
Background
Salem was the city where Melchizedek served as king and 'priest of the Most High God.' After Abraham defeated the four-king coalition and rescued his nephew Lot, Melchizedek brought out bread and wine and blessed him. Abraham gave him a tenth of everything. Psalm 76:2 identifies Salem with Zion, confirming it as ancient Jerusalem.
