Mount of Olives · Mount of Olives, east of Jerusalem
Where Jesus prayed, was betrayed, and ascended.
First mentioned in the Bible
On leaving, he went as was his custom to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples also followed him.— Luke 22:39
Background
The Mount of Olives lies east of Jerusalem, facing the Temple Mount across the Kidron Valley. Jesus often withdrew with his disciples to Gethsemane on its slopes to pray; on the night before his passion he prayed there in agony, his sweat like drops of blood, and was then betrayed by Judas. After his resurrection, Jesus ascended near Bethany on its far side, and angels declared he would return in like manner.
