Background
Damascus is among the world's oldest capitals. Saul the Pharisee set out for Damascus with letters to arrest believers, when suddenly a great light from heaven shone round about him and he heard the Lord's voice. Blind for three days, he received his sight when Ananias laid hands on him, and straightway preached in the synagogues that Jesus is the Son of God.
