Northernmost city of Israel, paired with Beersheba to denote the full extent of the land. Originally called Laish, renamed after the tribe of Dan conquered it.
First mentioned in the Bible
They named the city Dan, after the name of their ancestor Dan, who was born to Israel. However, the city was previously named Laish.— Judges 18:29
Background
Dan lies at the foot of Mount Hermon, at one of the sources of the Jordan River. The tribe of Dan migrated north and settled here during the period of the Judges. After Solomon's kingdom split, Jeroboam set up a golden calf altar here, making it a religious center of the northern kingdom. The famous Tel Dan Stele was discovered here, bearing an inscription mentioning the House of David.
Related Scriptures (New World Translation)
