Where Joshua commanded the sun and moon to stand still; Israel defeated the Amorite coalition here.
First mentioned in the Bible
"Joshua then spoke to Jehovah and said before the eyes of Israel: 'Sun, stand still over Gibeon! And moon, over the Valley of Aijalon!' So the sun stood still and the moon stopped."— Joshua 10:12-13
Background
When Joshua led Israel's conquest of Canaan, the Gibeonites allied with Israel, provoking five Amorite kings to attack Gibeon. Joshua marched all night to rescue them and commanded the sun to stand still over Gibeon and the moon over the Valley of Aijalon until Israel had completely defeated the enemy—one of the Bible's most famous miracles.
Related Scriptures (New World Translation)
It was then, on the day that Jehovah routed the Amʹor·ites before the eyes of the Israelites, that Joshua said to Jehovah before Israel: So the sun stood still and the moon did not move until the nation could take vengeance on its enemies. Is it not written in the book of Jaʹshar? The sun stood still in the middle of the sky and did not hasten to set for about a whole day.— Joshua 10:12-13
