ATLAS OF THE HOLY LAND

Canaan

Canaan · Modern-day Israel, Palestine, and parts of Lebanon and Syria
The land Jehovah God promised to Abraham’s descendants, a land flowing with milk and honey. Israel’s faith and history revolve around this Promised Land.
First mentioned in the Bible
Jehovah said to Abram: “Go out from your land and away from your relatives and from the house of your father to the land that I will show you.” Jehovah then appeared to Abram and said: “To your offspring I am going to give this land.”— Genesis 12:1, 7
Background
Canaan was located on the eastern shore of the Mediterranean Sea, serving as a crossroads of ancient Near Eastern civilizations. Jehovah God said to Abraham: “Go out from your land and away from your relatives and from the house of your father to the land that I will show you.” Abraham journeyed from Ur through Haran to Canaan, where Jehovah God promised to give this land to his descendants. Centuries later, Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt, and Joshua led them into the land of Canaan.
Related Scriptures (New World Translation)

Jehovah then appeared to Aʹbram and said: “To your offspring I am going to give this land.” So he built an altar there to Jehovah, who had appeared to him.— Genesis 12:1, 7
