Golgotha · Church of the Holy Sepulchre, Jerusalem
Where Jesus was impaled — 'the place of the skull.'
First mentioned in the Bible
When he had received the sour wine, Jesus said: “It has been accomplished!” and bowing his head, he gave up his spirit.— John 19:30
Background
Golgotha is Aramaic for 'skull,' outside Jerusalem's walls. Jesus was impaled between two thieves. Darkness covered the land from noon to 3pm. Jesus said 'It is finished!' The temple veil was torn from top to bottom and the earth quaked. The centurion said, 'Certainly this was God's Son.'
